What is teething ?

Baby’s first teeth which are known as deciduous teeth (yes like the trees!) or more commonly milk teeth, develop in your baby’s jaw as tooth buds while the child is growing in the womb.

These teeth then start to break through the gums when the child is six to nine months old.

This is known as teething.
teething - what happens
Although this is commonly known as cutting teeth they do not in actual fact cut the gum.

Instead, chemicals released in the body cause some cells in the gums to die and separate, allowing the teeth to come through.

Despite this helping hand teething is a long drawn out process and whilst some babies sail through with few problems others can get very sore and grumpy.

If your baby is less than happy with proceedings then don’t panic, there are plenty of things that you can do to help.
