How long does teething take ?

As we have already mentioned your child will usually start teething at between 6 and 9 months.

2 front teeth

Generally the bottom front teeth appear first followed by the top front teeth (They are called central incisors to be precise).

Next will come the top and bottom incisors either side of the front teeth which are the lateral incisors.

At 12 to 15 months you can expect the first back teeth (or molars) to come through followed by the canine teeth between 16 and 18 months.

From around 18 to 30 months the pre molars should appear which all being well should equip your child with a full set of 20 milk teeth.

See later sections for information on how to care for your baby’s teeth.

As for how long an individual tooth takes to come through I am afraid there is no hard and fast rule.

The time taken for a tooth to make it’s way through the gum will vary from child to child and even then from tooth to tooth.

It is entirely possible for your child to show signs of teething for months with nothing to show for it but a very sad face.

Others will appear so fast you will swear that you can see them moving!

There is some good news in all of this.   Even for those babies who have  a particularly rough time of teething it is likely that only the first few teeth will cause any serious discomfort (until the molars arrive later on anyway!) so things should get easier once they get into the swing of it.
